Preventing Employee Burnout

What is burnout? Workplace burnout is the emotional and physical exhaustion caused by job and personal stress that affect an employee’s performance.

Below are five signs of burnout:

  1. Decreased enthusiasm in  employee’s work
  2. Increased absenteeism
  3. High sensitivity to feedback
  4. Decreased productivity
  5. Isolation

What can an employer do?

Evaluate workloads to ensure they are realistic.

Adopt flexible work schedules. Forty-one Percent of HR managers say this is their top tactic to improve employee retention.

Improve employee engagement through awards, bonuses, etc.

Provide benefits and EAP (Employee Assistance Program), financial assistance, mental health, healthy lifestyles, education.

Train on topics like stress management, conflict resolution, teamwork with special attention to remote and hybrid workers.

You, as owner/manager must first recognize the signs of burnout and next take steps to prevent it.
