Cancel Your On-Line Subscriptions with New Laws

Cancel

Many of us have recurring subscriptions that automatically renew– some monthly, some yearly–which we may have forgotten about. Even worse, when we finally take the time to unsubscribe, we often encounter frustrating obstacles designed to make us reconsider.

Starting July 1, 2025, a new law will make it easier to cancel these recurring subscriptions that quietly drain our wallets.

The California Online Renewal Law mandates that consumers must be able to cancel their subscriptions immediately and exclusively on-line.

An amendment known as the “Click to Cancel” rule clarifies that businesses may offer incentives to retain customers. However, they must also provide a cancellation option that is prominently, continuously, and proximately displayed via a clear “Click to Cancel” button or link.

To prepare for these easier cancellation processes, consider keeping a secure list of all your online subscriptions. This will not only help you manage them more effectively but also protect you from scam emails falsely claiming that a subscription is expiring.
